Common Questions

Who can install Kerf cabinets?

While Kerf doesn't maintain an in-house installation team, we have established partnerships with skilled cabinet installers in the Greater Seattle Area. Our installation arrangements are customized to accommodate your specific project requirements, taking into account factors such as location, size, and complexity.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • When the design process kicks off, please get in touch with the installer to discuss the scheduling and billing.

  • Once you've approved the final elevation drawings, these should be forwarded to the installer to facilitate proper preparation.

  • The cabinet delivery usually happens a day or two before installation begins.

  • For smaller projects like bathroom vanities and Kerf Walls, our crew can handle the delivery for an hourly rate (chat with your Kerf designer for a delivery estimate).

  • Large projects like kitchen cabinets are delivered via a moving company (EcoMovers). A Kerf team member will supervise both loading and delivery to ensure proper handling. We'll provide a detailed estimate for these larger deliveries.

  • The installation duration varies depending on the project size (e.g., a single bathroom vanity takes a day, while a 150 sq ft kitchen would take around 4-5 days to install).

If you are outside the Seattle area, your cabinets can be shipped via Maersk shipping company or picked up in a U-Haul truck. We may be able to recommend installers in your area based on our network of past project partnerships.

Can I install these cabinets myself?

We strongly suggest that you hire a professional to install your Kerf cabinets. While professionals find our cabinets straightforward to install, they can be quite challenging for an overly optimistic DIY enthusiast. We recommend that only those with previous experience in installing kitchen cabinets undertake the task.

Walls and floors are never perfectly flat. The key aspect of installing Kerf cabinets (or any cabinet) is scribing the edges to match the uneven surfaces in your space. The precision of the scribe greatly affects the final look of a custom cabinet installation. Watch this video featuring Nathan Hartman, the owner of Kerf Design and an installation expert, as he scribes toe kicks, cabinet sides, and bench tops. It's an excellent video to view before deciding to handle scribes on your own!
